Photo Story: Nylund Design

Hello! Welcome to my first photo story. A couple months ago, I wanted to create something different with my photography and the idea of a photo story came to mind. Rather than just creating beautiful photos, I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone by telling a story through photos. My first story is about Eleisha from Nylund Design, a handcrafted leather goods business located on the hidden level of the Brisbane Arcade. On the day of the shoot, I got to learn about the craft of leather making while documenting Eleisha's creative process. A big thank you to Eleisha for the collaborating on the project! The Maker: Eleisha Nylund, the maker behind Nylund Design. Eleisha started making leather goods in early 2012.

The Beginning: This knife sheath was Eleisha's first leather project.

The Studio: In February 2017, Eleisha moved into her studio space located on the hidden level in the Brisbane Arcade.

The Design: A part of Eleisha's creative process involves creating patterns for the design of the final product on her computer.

The Leather: Once the designs for a product have been created, Eleisha chooses the right type of leather for cutting. There are many leather types such as calf and kangaroo, each with different properties.

The Details: To create highly detailed leather goods, Eleisha uses an array of tools such as hole punches, stitching chisels and an edge beveler. In the photos above, Eleisha uses an edge beveler to take off the sharp edge of the leather for the belt.

The Saddle Stitch: For all of Eleisha's handmade leather goods, she uses a traditional tecnhique called saddle stitching rather than machine sewn. The saddle stitch provides stronger durability but takes a longer time to produce an item.

I hope you enjoyed my first photo story on documenting the creative process of leather making! It was a great experience learning about leather and I was amazed by Eleisha's craftsmanship and attention to detail.
